Helpful Things to Say and Do

Sometimes you may wonder what is the right thing to do or say to your loved one, so that they feel supported.  This can be frustrating if s/he is resistant to your attempts to connect to your loved one during such a difficult time.

Here are some guidelines:

Helpful Things to Say and Do

  • Remind your loved one that s/he is loved and valued.
  • Although you don't understand exactly what s/he is going through, you can convey that you notice the struggle and that you do want to help.
  • Engage your loved one in conversations about his/her strengths, and future plans. Also, don't forget to have normal, everyday conversations about funny stories, current events etc.
  • Focus any compliments about appearance on things that are not weight/size based, i.e. "That colour looks great on you", "There's that wonderful smile", "That style suits you."
  • Feel free to ask how you can help. Be prepared to provide reasons for treatment and the benefits of recovery.
  • Try to make special plans, both together and separately, between big appointments (a movie, a play, a long walk, a country drive) . You both need the break.
