Family Care : Weighing Children in School

    Author: njkohl
Subject: Weighing Children in School
Posted: Dec 09 2009 at 10:52pm

I actually dropped gym class in my last year of high school because they insisted on weighing us. They were doing it in front of the other students, which is why it bothered me so much at the time, but in retrospect me knowing my weight was not at all helpful either. I understand obesity is a problem as well, but it's pretty obvious when someone is in excess of weight to the point that they may have to worry about their health - the number on the scale is not what's important. Are they actually doing anything with the data?

Family Care : letting go

    Author: Julie
Subject: letting go
Posted: Oct 05 2009 at 2:05pm

My daughter was in grade 8 when we were informed that she had been vomiting after meals. In our case camp send us an e-mail.
I remember the profound confussion, anger and the following "we can fix this" mode. I went from "if life is so bad, maybe you need to move out" to "take my hand, we will get better together" on a daily basis.

Going to doctors appointments really didn't help, because at first we considered her inability to keep food down a physical thing. I read a lot about the topic, my daughter read a lot herself, even did a school project on it. Some of the descriptions didn't fit my daughter's case, and she took some of the info she found and used it against her own body: she is now an avid laxative user as well. It didn't klick on how far things had gone until a friend pointed out that keeping things down can be a real challange for someone who had been at it for a while.

One of my greatest frustrations was with our doctor: she never said to me that all of these things were symptombs, and send my daughter to specialist appointments for things like acid reflux. I am still angry about that! So much wasted time!

Well meaning people have asked me, if my daughter was ever abused. Even the clinic that she is going to now has asked her that question. What am I supposed to say to that? I really don't know for sure - how can anybody know for sure? None of us are ever together 24/7!

My daughter says she hasn't been abused - but the message keeps coming towards her. I find this approach rather "Freud" and I am wondering if a mentally unstable person should have those suggestions thrown at them!

I can't protect her from any of this, not from the disease, not from the mood swings, not from well meaning people, not from the confussion, and not from the negativity that is being created towards her family and that has been within the family.

I can only control my own reactions.

She did move out at the end of August. I am sad and angry that she has pushed us away like that, but her sibblings are able to breath and there is not as much stress in my marriage. We are letting her go, but it is still a struggle.

Still praying for my little girl!
